Once upon a time...

I was a construction site supervisor for a home builder. I had "donated" 7 years of my life to my employer in return for a wage that was not quite enough to pay the monthly bills. It was a basic J.O.B. with little, if any, room for advancement. Does that sound familiar?Anyway, we had an average sort-of comfortable life in a little rented 3 bedroom house with an old VW Jetta in the driveway. Not fancy, but I was not one to complain.

And then one cold and wet November Monday morning I'm on the job site dealing yet again with disgruntled sub-contractors. My boss pulls up in his fancy company car and says, "We have to cut costs and we're letting you go.''

"WHAT! Me? Why?" I had spent more time working with this company than I had spent with my family (sound familiar, again?). Well I tried everything to save my job, but my days were numbered ... "4" to be exact. Friday was "pink slip" day. I realized in a blinding flash of the obvious that my family and I had NEVER been safe, and we never would be AS LONG AS I WORKED FOR SOMEONE ELSE! That very night that I promised myself I would never again put my family's well-being in someone else's power. I was $45,000 in debt… but I was ready to be my own boss. (At least, I THOUGHT I was.)So here I am, thinking to myself ...
